Week Two

More office production - but now everyone is in a huge hurry and the office is in an uproar because we start shooting on thursday.

Drew is worried about thursday. It's funny, I swear half the reason I'm there is to reassure her about things, listen to her vent about the actor/writer who is making her life miserable, and help her stand her ground against the exec producer, the writer, the DP, and the 1st AD. She thinks it's going to be the hardest day of shooting because the scene is so important and emotionally charged.. and we are working with about 10 kids. Some of them are really little. I went to Powell's to find her a book on working with children, and assured her that with me around kids, we are totally golden. That put her mind at ease a little.

So thursday finally came! Yay! I love set. There isn't any other place on earth that I'd rather be. And this is kind of embarrassing but Drew put me in the scene. I'm one of the abused shelter kids. I think she did it for a lot of reasons. one was that she wanted more "punk" looking kids in the scene. Two she thought I could communicate with the kids better and help direct them better if I was actually in the scene. I pulled an oscar winning performance and was able to cry on command. I didn't know I could do that! But I did it like 4 times. I made the exec. producer cry. and everyone came up to me after the scene and was like "wow jenna that was amazing" to tell you the truth it was really easy. I spent the whole week up to this point crying because I had to say goodbye to so many things.

Drew was really happy with the day overall. I thought it went great. The kid who shoots himself in the head almost made me cry. I told him at lunch that he was really good and had everyone in tears. Which he did. Kid's only like 12 and he rocked it.
Next day I spent the whole day at drew's side watching the screens in video village. That's what we call the monitor set up where you watch what the camera is capturing. I've never been allowed to get that close to it before! haha. Now I'm a regular at that station. Drew thought it a good place for me to be most of the time so I can see what she's actually capturing. More than once she asks for my opinion on scene composition or position of actors or props. She trusts my opinion and judgement and that's a really incredible feeling.

Next week will be hard. 5 days of shooting.

Week One

Wow. It's good to be back in a production office. It's especially nice this time around because I don't have to answer phones and make copies for people.

Hmm. What did I do this week. I ran alot of miscellaneous errands for Drew. I guess I should explain a little bit before I start in on what I'm doing. So I was offered a job as assistant to the director of a movie. They've got a 6 million dollar budget (even though they keep telling the crew and everyone else that it's 1 million - but I'm a former best friend of the production coordinator so I have inside information) At first I was a little sad that i didn't get a job with the art department but now I'm 200 percent happier with the position that I've got. Unlike any film job I've ever had, this time around I only have to answer to one person, not 20. It's great. I work for the director. That's it! I'm even staying in her amazing condo with her (at her request).

the only thing that has been hard was parting with my life in Eugene. Which I was really worried about doing once I graduated. In more ways than one this job is a god send. If there was one thing that could have distracted me from the horror of quitting my preschool job and coaching soccer and going to class and seeing my friends.. it's this.

However. I do miss class. I do miss my friends. I especially miss my house and my cat. Not to mention that I'm sort of living a double life here. I spend 2 - 3 days out of the week being distraught about something. usually it's the day I leave for either place. When I'm working on the movie I don't want to leave and when I come home for the weekend I don't want to go back.
